Bishop Obrey Lyimo‘s dream is, that to all children of the Karatu region a happy childhood can be offered and safeguarded combined with a sound education based on a child oriented pedagogic in order to achieve well qualified and self-reliant grownups, who will succeed in higher schools and be competent to find work in the region and take care of the regions welfare. Furthermore, that all children attended St. Origin will become good ambassadors of the Montessori idea in this region. Bishop Obrey Lyimo shares Maria Montessori’s deep conviction and vision, that every child is from birth on – under normal conditions – curious and self-motivated to learn and to work with joy Lutheran parishes in the Karatu region, to establish in 2013 St. Origen, a kindergarten/preschool with only 7 children, 3 of them were orphans.
The region of Karatu with increasing tourists, visiting the nearby natural reservates, experienced that a lot of children did not attend school. Instead of going to school, a lot of girls were connected to the sex market and giving birth to babies, for whom nobody took care. Often this ended up taking them to the villages, where their grandparents lived. However, a lot of them had not even this opportunity. A second detrimental development in this region was the significant under employment of native workers because of their poor qualification. Many hotels, restaurants and NGOs therefore preferred people from outside of the region, who were better educated. This motivated Bishop Obrey Lyimo, Head of ten As the school grew and grew a second school on a rented campus nearby became necessary. So today the two schools encompasses almost 150 students and is still growing.
The school initiative of Bishop Obrey Lyimo became popular and achieved a lot of interest in the surrounding of Karatu, as the need for partly bilingual education is huge in the region. The education, based on the pedagogic of Maria Montessori, is well accepted by children and parents. The results of students of St. Origen preschool, when moving to public elementary schools, are very encouraging.
